On the 22nd of June 2015, all the year 8s of Havelock North Intermediate came together and visited Matahiwi Marae. When we walk onto the Marae and meet the tangata whenua, it's called a Powhiri, with girls in the front and boys in the back to protect them.
At the start of the Powhiri the lady from the tangata whenua side starts off the Karanga.
The Marae hosts were Whea Edwards, Matua Unahi and Matua Mulligan, the kaumatua.
At the Marae we learnt about the history and culture that the people were involved in the past. The Marae hosts were Whea Edwards, Matua Unahi and Matua Mulligan, the kaumatua.
We learnt about the legends, stories that happened 100+ years ago.
Whea Edwards talked to us in the whare Kai about the history of her big family and the Marae.
Matua Unahi talked to us in the Meeting House about the figure carvings of Kahungunu and his ancestors and relations, including Rongokokai (the legend of Te Mata Peak).
Matua Mulligan was talking to us on the outside of the Marae (the atea) on the seats about the statues and the ancestors of Maui.
